Marriage Registration

• For an international marriage to be valid in the Republic of Korea, the wedding party must be equipped with the marriage requirements specified by the relevant law of each person’s country, and at the same time, the marriage record must be recorded in the Family Relation Register by registering the marriage.
• Procedure
  • Reporting Agency : Dong-Gu office
  • Necessary documents :
    • a certificate of the marriage requirements of the foreign party, and a translated copy
    • a notarial certificate of the foreign party’s nationality (family relation register, birth certificate, copy of passport, copy of status register, etc.)
    • a copy of the marriage certificate (the signatures or seals of both wedding parties and two adult witnesses)
    • IDs of both wedding parties

Divorce

• Your marriage with Korean spouse ends when:
• Divorce
  • If your spouse's misconduct has caused the divorce, you may stay in Korea even after the divorce.
    However, you are required to submit documents to prove your spouse's misconduct.
    You may also stay in Korea if you are raising one or more children born between you and your Korean spouse or you are supporting Korean parents or family.
• Your spouse dies or is missing
• You separate from your spouse
• Foreign spouse's residency in abandonment
  • To protect foreign spouses from domestic violence, foreign spouses will not be considered illegal residency only with their Korean spouses' declaration of abandonment.
• Expiration and extension of stay during divorce trial
  • If your duration of stay expires during divorce trial, you can extend your stay by submitting documents to prove your trial. With the proof, your F-2 status will be validated and will be extended every three months until the end of trial.
